The Region Four chapter met with local media representatives on May 28, 2008. Here are the minutes from the meeting:
PIO Topics1. Disseminated Tampa Tribune article of March 16, 2008, “Few Agencies Ace Public Records Test,” and discussed implications. 2. Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office PIO Debbie Carter detailed the circumstances of the public records release of the HCSO jail tape showing the dumping of a wheelchair-bound arrestee. The tape was released without knowledge of PIO Carter or review by detention supervisors. 3. Bright House Networks digital channels – Pasco Sheriff’s Office PIO Kevin Doll detailed recent meeting with Bright House personnel and local law enforcement agencies and the development of free Video on Demand for internal use by law enforcement agencies. 3. Discussed repercussions on the passage of Amendment One to local agencies. Case in point, Jeannine Mallory, Pinellas County Health Dept., will be losing her job at the end of June. 4. FDLE PIO Trena Reddick detailed FDLE’s new sexual offender/predator email notification service, gave a demonstration on how it worked, and how agencies can use it to inform their citizens.
Media topics1. Pasco Sheriff’s Office PIO Doug Tobin detailed a problem with a news channel’s helicopter coverage during a recent SWAT callout in Pasco County. Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office PIO Sgt. Jim Bordner detailed his problem with helicopter coverage during a suicidal subject’s standoff on the Clearwater causeway. It was noted that the Tampa Bay news media still abides by a long-standing agreement not to broadcast live SWAT situations. 2. Pasco SO PIO Kevin Doll noted a growing problem with multiple reporters calling from the same media organization asking for news stories, or information and records from the same incident. Several PIOs reiterated the same problem. 3. Pasco SO PIO Kevin Doll noted that, after being at a scene for several hours, some media personnel expect the PIO to remain on scene for the next shift of reporters coming on, even if there is no new information to disseminate. 4. DOT PIO Kris Carson reported a TV reporter’s complaint that she “tipped off” another PIO about a story that reporter was working on that involved both agencies. PIO Kevin Doll explained to the media personnel in attendance that this was a common courtesy conducted between PIOs to give them the chance to research and prepare a knowledgeable response to reporters who often practice “ambush” interviews. 5. Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Larry Coggins was presented with an appreciation award by the Tampa Bay region of the Florida Law Enforcement Public Information Officers Association as he was leaving FHP to make a career change.
