Crime Analysis and the PIO
1pm - 2pm
Stacy Belledin, manager of the Crime Analysis Unit, Jacksonville Sheriff’s
Office (Biography)
When the media requests data and/or information from an agency, the Public
Information Office usually plays the role of liaision between the media and
others within the agency. Frequently media requests are vague and do not fully
describe the desired objective, leaving requests to be resubmitted again and
again. Crime Analysis Units can be a great place for PIOs to receive information
for media and other public requests. This presentation will discuss what types
of data and information crime analysis units have available for PIOs, and how it
can be used to an agency's advantage.

Carrie Rodgers (Biography),
Polk County Sheriff’s Office
130pm – 3:00pm
The shooting death of Deputy Sheriff Matt Williams and his K-9
partner Diogi, and the shooting of another deputy, Doug Speirs,
became instant national news due to the fact that schools in the
immediate vicinity of the shooting were locked down and the suspect
remained at large for approximately 24 hours. This was not the Polk
County Sheriff's Office's first experience with media coverage of
this magnitude, but it certainly ranked as one of the most critical
incidents that has ever occurred at the agency. Due to the swift law
enforcement response and the cooperation from the media, the suspect
was found and shot to death just one day after he ambushed and
killed Matt Williams and his K-9 partner.
